The Source Of All Magic

Dear reader,

I welcome you back to the Witches Cauldron. Today I will discuss with you a personal theory and belief of mine regarding the origin of all magic.   There are many misconceptions and theories regarding the source of all magic.   Some may believe that all magic comes from dragons and that they are, in essence, pure magic. Others may say it leaked out from the great engine known as the Sphere of Time when it was destroyed during a great cosmic war known as the 333rd war and that its power has since been slowly diminishing.   Some may say it comes from within, that your heart and that believing is the true source.   Some yet may say that it is the soul, spirit and your mind projecting its will upon reality.

I, for one, believe otherwise.

During one of the previous entries into the index, I may have briefly mentioned something about this topic. (See Of Wizards And Mages). I believe there are 2 fundamental types of magic, manipulation and creation.

Manipulation is as the name suggests, the ability to manipulate things,  this is the most common type of magic that you see, curses, defences, attack spells, healing, summoning, and much much more. Anything that involves the elements, or using something that is pre-existing in the environment around you, or in another location (yes even another dimension, time, world, plane, space, and etc.).   Most mages would typically be considered to be using a power of this type.  The general rule here is that nothing new is created, it is simply something that exists being changed, commanded, altered, moved, or otherwise. This one may take many years of training for some to master, but it pulls from the natural life force and energy of everything around them that they use.

Creation, as the name suggests, is to create something.  This is, in my opinion, the truest form of magic. Typically this is limited to creators or higher-level beings, however, the general idea is that they will create something from nothing, or pull something out of their minds or imagination into reality.  Anything which creates life or energy from nothing or from within falls under this type. Typical mages can train for years and never reach this stage.  There are some exceptions of course.

As a rule of thumb, manipulation-type magic uses what has been already created or already exists, while creation magic simply creates something new into existence. Creation magic typically would be seen as the more powerful of the two, but that depends on how you measure power.  Manipulation would be considered the most destructive.

Now what does this have to do with the origin of magic you may be wondering, and that is simple: creation magic is the source of all magic.  Magic in its purest form is a will that has been applied to energy to force it to a certain goal. This energy can either already exist or needs to be created. If it’s being created, it’s creation magic, if not it is manipulation of energy that is already pre-existing. Now you may also wonder, well if the energy is pre-existing then where does it originally come from? All of life has energy, but where does life come from?  Even the dead, and the unliving, and the undead have energy, even stones or objects or material or immaterial things; even emotions have energy.

The source of all life may be a topic beyond the scope of this index, however, consider if everything was once created at one point, either by a being or just by chance, or if some force or intelligence created it, that initial energy has been changing and moving, fluid like water ever changing like the tide in an ocean of time and space with our souls drifting along it.  The evolution of this energy, the changing of the tides, has created life in many forms. Either by a will of one, many, or chance.  If all life is energy, and all life is magic, then the original source is all of creation, created be, and life itself.

Thank you, dear reader, for considering these words, although they may one day be disproven, or proven true. For now, this is just my own take on where magic comes from.

May your soul shine as bright as the stars above dear reader, till we meet again.
